New Tradition

This weekend Debbie, Deb, and I decided to start a new tradition among us for Christmas. This really came as I was remembering this tradition one of my high school friends did. All the girls in her family chose one theme/gift idea (like vases or slippers), exchanged names, and went on a hunt to find that perfect gift for that person. We are doing something similar. Our first theme idea is "nature." We are now officially on the look-out for nature-y gifts for our names. I've got some ideas already.

Something kind of funny: There are only three of us doing the exchange, and yet we drew names. Think about that. There is no possible way for us not to know who has our names. We even discussed this and said there was a possibility, but on the way home, Robby clearly explained to me that could not be so. If I am A, Debbie is B, and Deb is C; and if I have B, then B could only have C, and C could only have A. Otherwise, two would exchange, and one would end up with her own. Did you follow that?

So, Debbie and Deb - we are savvy, college-educated women, and yet we missed this :)

  1. So Robby shouldn't have spoiled the surprise : )
Actually, now there are four of us. Rosalee is in.

  2. Four! Now there really can be a surprise. We need a new name exchange time, though. I wonder how that works with one person not being present. I know! We'll mail her her slip. Robby or Jerry can check to make sure she didn't get her own, then we'll mail it to her. Wow, this is getting complicated :)

  3. Actually, believe it or not, I was thinking about it today, and realized this very thing (i.e. the distribution of names). Can, ask Rob to see if he can produce an equation that summarizes this numerical phenomenon.
    (n-1)! maybe?

Anyway, it's awesome. Rosealee is IN!

Word verification: pambe . Sounds like a Hawaiian dish, or maybe a name Wellington would have called Nelson.
